Abstract
We live in a colorful world that is painted by lines of colors.Because we perceive colors as we canconceive life and its difficulties, colors reduce those difficulties andplant in our minds dreamsthat sometimessparkleand sometimes turnintoblack painting. Therefore, colors are like maps in our imaginations that we dye clothes, walls, jewels, and emotions with.Colors are everywhere; they are something that could be found in every corner of life. Concerning ancientnations; they participated in stating their impression toward every color for their importance.
This study is a contract between colors and the technique of symbolism through scrutinizing
the indirect use of colors, i.e. close examination of texts in which colors are used in harmony with symbols. The study is limited to the color black in contrast to whiteand its connotative meanings behind the curtain of symbolism. To reach the ideaAl Sayyab's collection of poems (The Rain Song) is chosen to be studied, for itsrichness with material that contains various cases of color black.
The study consists of abstract, introduction, and two main sections. The first section deals with the color symbolism of time such as night, dusk and darkness. The second one is about the color symbolism of place asgrave, cave, andprison. Finally, the study ends with concluding section plus list of bibliography.
