Abstract
The aim of this paper is to conduct a semantic study of ambiguity in Ernest Hemingway’s short stories, with a special focus on My Old Man. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this paper investigates the various forms of ambiguity found in Hemingway's short stories. It looks at how Hemingway uses words, phrases, and sentence structures to create and express several levels of meaning and perceptions. This study delves into how these ambiguities affect readers' interpretation and understanding. This contributes to the complexity of his themes, characters, and plot development. By analyzing specific instances of ambiguity, the paper explores how Hemingway’s use of language evokes uncertainty and openness to interpretation. Additionally, the study examines the broader significance of ambiguity in literature. It looks at the strategies employed by Hemingway to engage readers on a deeper intellectual level. In conclusion, this analysis highlights the role of semantic ambiguity in shaping the readers' experience. It also contributes to a more nuanced understanding of Hemingway’s literary techniques.
