Abstract

This research is titled (The effectiveness of conceptual blending in the semantic interpretation of Kurdish idioms). It is an attempt to present the semantic interpretation of idioms in the Kurdish language from the perspective of cognitive semantics as a branch of cognitive linguistics. Idioms are an integral part of language and can be seen in the daily speech of speakers and have a complex structure, and understanding the meaning, concept and message of these expressions requires the use of their different figurative meanings. On the other hand, language reflects the way of understanding and experiencing the world through metaphor, which is the understanding of a specific concept in another conceptual framework. One of the claims of metaphor theory is that metaphor includes two domains of source and target, and the domain of source is used to discuss the domain of target. One of the most recent theories of conceptual metaphor is the theory of conceptual blending, which was presented by Fauconnier and Turner, and theorists used conceptual space, mental space, and conceptual blending network. For this purpose, this research deals with the semantic analysis of Kurdish idioms in the framework of the theory of conceptual blending as a theory in cognitive semantics, by raising the question whether the theory of conceptual blending helps the semantic analysis of Kurdish idioms?
