Abstract

Pragmatics studies contextual meaning, establishing a relationship between language and context. This relationship can be explored through deixis. Without understanding the deictic items in a particular text, that text's meaning will be unclear. Therefore, they can be interpreted through context. Undeniably, grasping the deictic items in a literary text will make the process of interpretation easier. According to Levinson (1983) and Fattah (2011), deixis is divided into five types: person, time, place, discourse, and social deixis. This research paper uses the descriptive qualitative method because it aims to analyze the types of deixis that can be found in the Kurdish story ‘Pashmawei Merdmndalek’, ‘The Residue of a Teenager’ by Muhammad Fariq Hassan, and classify the types of deixis used in the story. The ways to analyze the data are reading the story, finding the deixis, and classifying the types of deixis. The result of the research shows that the total number of all the types of deixis is 453. The most used deixis is person deixis, which takes a frequency of 236 (52 %). After that, temporal deixis takes the frequency of 164 (36%). Then, discourse deixis appears with a frequency of 21 (4.6). The other type before the last one is place deixis with a frequency of 20 (4.4%). The last one is the social deixis with a frequency of 12 (2.6).
