Abstract
Militar take – overs are regardedasa new phenomenon witnissed by many Arab countries, and Syria is one of those countries. Chief of staff, Husni al- Zaim, started the series of military take – overs in Syria on 30 March , 1949.
The views of the researchers regarding the nature of al-Zaim’s take – over. Some of them regarded it an internal morment through which he tried to save himself from the accusahons against him, whereas others saw it as a direct interference by the U.S.A to protect its interests.
The present study tries to shedlight on the take – over and the Arabic regiond competition for contriling Syria. Moreover, it studies the conditions through which enabled al- Zaim to reach the leadership of the army, the method of achieving the take – over and the procedures taken afterwards, and the internal reasons that made al- Zaim do this movement as a result of which he became the leader of Syria. It also investigates the views that concentrate on the external role in the take – over especially role of USA which they regard as the country got most benefit from operation.
It is seen that the leader of take – over was an unbalanced person who desired reaching the power by using the unstable circumstances of Syria after the war in 1948. Moreover, discovering the purchase of bad weapons and food staff was the reason that pushed al- Zaim to move in that direction.
The events through which Syria passed during the period of this study proved that the military leaders were unable to become political leaders and the American role in this process is not clear and it is difficult to pass a final Judgement on that.
