Abstract
Al-Tanookhi had produced in his book ((Neshwar Al-Muhadhara wa Akhbar Al-Muthakara)) an important information about hobbies and vanity sessions in the Baghdadi society during the 4th century A.H./ 10th A.D. and something before.That period characterized by the appearance of some hobbies such as chess and dice. Attention to arts, poetry,singing, music,even the number of drunkers had increased and the castles had filled with maidens.
The Bghdadis had practiced a number of hobbies such as chess which had been traced back by some historians to India.Arts ,writers ,poets had excelled in this game. Even the caliphs had practised this game too. Women were not far of it ,but that was very restricted.
This study falls into two parts. In first part, I have tackled the most prominent hobbies which had been spread in the Baghdadi society ,the important of which were chess and dice in addition to give a background about the the rudiments of those games. The most prominent man to use it a man called Al- Suli , he had been regarded as a model for managing this game.
As for the second part , it has been used particularly to talk about the sessions of hobbies in Baghdad through out the book ,the focus of study , which includes bars, singing and dissipation .Vanities clubs were not confined in bars ,but wine clubs , vanity positions and wine drinking positions had spread out to include some orchards .
While singing had spread out during the reign of Abbasids. and there appeared alot of men and women singers who were after reputation and money ;among them Tuways and Ishaq Al-Mosuli . and others. Singing as Ibn Khaldoon said was a profession adherent to assemblies of influential
